The buzz word out there in the foodie world right now is Hemp Seed … everyone is talking about hemp seed being made into foods and what you can do with it. Here at new hemisphere™ we make Hemp Seed Hulled, Hemp Protein, Hemp Seed Flour, and one that has been around longer than the others, Hemp Seed Oil.
So what are these foods, why now, and why should we eat them?
All of these foods come from the mighty Hemp Seed from the Cannabis Sativa plant. Now don’t worry, the Cannabis plant our Hemp Seed comes from is not the same as the Cannabis plant that produces the recreational drug, marijuana. Nothing in common there. Just a nutritional punch of goodness ready for us to reap the benefits.
Why haven’t these products been on the market till now?
There was a legislative change last November to allow food products other than oil to be made from hemp seed. Before that there was too much confusion surrounding hemp seed used for food consumption with marijuana. Yes the latter also comes from a cannabis plant BUT it is a different strain with a completely different makeup.
So now we are setting the record straight. Our food products only offer nutritional goodness, there is no drug ‘high’. This is because the psychoactive component, called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC is way easier to remember!) is kept at very low levels (less than 0.35%).
And why should we eat them?
They are source of essential fatty acids, Omega 3 and 6, contain easily digestible protein, and some are an excellent source of fibre. Omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids must be consumed in the diet as our bodies cannot make them. We need protein for growth and maintenance, and of course, fibre keeps us going regularly to the toilet. So much goodness, and all from this tiny seed. Thumbs up I say!
